been traveling with the president. let's talk about the energy there and the size of that crowd. can you give us an idea about both of those things? >> well, we haven't gotten an official crowd count yet, craig. i can tell you that the crowd here is certainly energized. a couple thousand people. james taylor started things off, warmed up the crowd before president obama took the stage, so he got things going. president obama getting a lot of cheers. the president has made this his closing arguments really about trust. you heard him say that essentially mitt romney does not do what he says he's going to do. he talked about his record as governor in massachusetts. of course, that is a neighboring state to new hampshire. this crowd quite familiar with mitt romney's record. one of the things president obama focusing on today and really throughout his campaign speeches recently is the fact that mitt romney says he is not going to increase taxes for middle class families and that he did that while he was governor of massachusetts. the romney campaign pushing back saying president obama is
in the energy states, of course, but it also creates a lot of jobs in states that use energy, because manufacturing of all kinds uses energy, some more than others. and when energy is low cost and abundant, as it will be as we take advantage of these resources, we'll bring manufacturing back. it's already beginning to happen. we're going to see more of it happen. we're going to get more manufacturing back in this country. we're going to see this economy take off with that, number one. number two, trade. it is good for us to be able to trade with other nations, particularly in latin america. we have some -- we have some real advantages in trading with latin america. many of our citizens have roots there. we speak the language in many corners of our nation. the time zone, of course, is friendly for us. and lat inamerica's economy is almost as large as that of china. there's a large middle class and growing middle class. this is a big opportunity for us to trade and expand the sales of our goods and services in latin america. but by the way, if nations cheat, and china has cheated over t
business. we need a business expert like mitt romney. unleash american energy, impose sa sanctions for unfair china trading practices. these are important things because the economy is the number one issue. >> you're trying to cram a lot of things in in these last five days. >> chris, let's get to it. we're going to be listening to the president later this hour. his campaign describing the speech as a closing argument to the voters. what tone does he need to strike? chris, does he really need to keep it respectful or hit back against mitt romney? >> you know, i don't think he necessarily needs to hit back. i personally think, no surprise, that it was a mistake for governor romney to come out as harsh as he did. when there's a national crisis, something as significant and so many people have been affected by hurricane sandy, the last thing people think about and talk about and want to focus on is politics. you have to be very careful about that. i think the president is going to come out, especially in light of what you've seen over the last few days, and strike a more positive, uni
. they had hundreds of volunteers, 12 our shifts, 3 1/2 days straight. a lot of good energy here right now. >> it's good richard lui to see folks coming together on staten island. arguably the hardest hit of the areas affected. while i have you here i do want to ask you about something else not to put you in an awkward spot considering your location. there had been a fair amount of flack given to the red cross earlier this week from residents that i talked to from local officials as well who said that the response by the red cross was not as swift as they would have liked for it to be. what your hearing about that and your hearing anything from the red cross? >> well, what we're hearing from those that are hear in staten island today, they are thinking about looking forward here, craig. there's still that overflow of, well disgruntlement. what will happen next. when will we have heat. when will we have electricity. that was the sentiment as people continued to wait in line for gasoline to take care of their generators. it's cold overnight. 30 degree weather. sometimes you get sun. we saw a
energy resources. on day one, i'll act to increase the number of leases and permits to drill on federal land. i will ask to speed the approval of the keystone pipeline from canada. i'll revisit coal regulations that were designed by the administration to strangle the industry and, instead, make sure we can use the resources we have in a clean and responsible way. you see, on day one, we will be closer to north american energy independence. now, i'm going to move to boost trade, especially with latin america. i'll ask congress for trade promotion authority and that's a power every president has used or requested since it was created back in 1974. oh, except president obama. and i'll finally designate china has the currency manipulator in getting trade to work for america. now, third, i'm going to send to congress the retraining format to make sure every worker who feels left behind in this economy can get the chance for a good paying job. and fourth, i'll move to tackle out of control spending. i will -- i'll send congress the first of several fundamental reforms. this person will be cal
